Strengths

Educative

  • Seniors took part in Bronze level practice expeditions for their D of E Award during the Easter Holidays in Pencelli in Brecon on the 7th - 8th April & 14th – 15th April.
  • The whole of Year 7 at Radyr Comprehensive School enjoyed PSE lessons about the dangers of Cyber Bullying at the Youth Club during May and June.
  • Classes in Year 11 took part in Substance Misuse workshops during PSE at the Youth Club looking at the effects of alcohol and cannabis.
  • Seniors had a very wet few days down the Gower completing their Silver Practice Expedition between the 15th – 17th July.
  • Seniors completed the Bronze level of their D of E award by taking part in their Qualifying Expedition at the Gower over 20th – 21st June and the 27th -28th June.

Empowering

  • Youth club members voiced their opinions on youth provision in their area and discussed things that they could implement to make the running of youth club go more smoothly and which events and activities that they would like to see at the youth club.
  • The Inters girls planned a residential in Tenby where they stayed at Manobier Youth Hostel and took part in the Crystal Maze, had a go at bowling, visited the Blue Lagoon and Oakwood and took a trip around Tenby town centre. This residential took place between Friday 5th – Sunday 7th June.
  • The junior members from Young Achievers helped to organise a fun two day adventure residential in Morfa Bay in Pendine Sands nr Tenby. The members participated in challenging activities such as a muddy assault course, high ropes and surfing. Although the weather wasn’t great the young people had the best time.
  • The Skater Crew organised the third annual Skate Safari this time going to Stoke, Stafford and Corby. However, we didn’t manage to make it to Corby as our minibus driver became very ill. Therefore we had to be rescued by our friendly YDO and Youth Forum Officer. It is proposed that we return to Corby during the October half term as the boys had already paid for it as part of the trip.

Expressive

  • The youth club took part in the Community Eco Festival down at the Church Rooms in Radyr on a very sunny Saturday on 2nd May. To promote the youth club and support the local community the youth club arranged a five a side football match, the Smoothie Bike, a cake sale by Youth Forum members and the Nintendo Wii. Working in partnership with the Street Based team it showed young people in a very positive light and was very well attended.
  • As part of the Radyr Festival in partnership with the Street Based team we held a ‘Summer Skate Off’ at Radyr Skate Park on Saturday 9th May where we had young people from Ely and Radyr bmxing, skateboarding and inlining a BBQ, refreshments and a competition. The afternoon was well attended by a mixture of young people and raised the profile of the Skate Park and the Youth Service.
  • Clwb Y Ddraig held a party on Friday 8th May for their Spanish visitors at Radyr Youth Centre. It was a fun filled evening with a Wales V Spain football tournament, food and refreshments and our favourite Year 9 band ‘Monday Again’ wowed the audience.
  • Youth Club members took part in ‘Take Off 2’ as part of the Radyr Festival. This outdoor music event took place in Radur Gardens and was well attended by youth club members and families from the local community.
  • Senior girls took part in ‘Breakin the Bay’ at the Wales Millennium Centre on Sunday 14th June where they took part in a Lockin & Poppin workshop with professional dance tutors and got to watch the Piped Piper dance production on the main stage.

Participative

  • The LA group all participated in a gorge walking trip to encourage the young people to work as team. Bringing together a group of skaters, members of Radyr Youth Forum and two young people from Greenhill School. The group and the staff had an excellent day out and really gelled as a team.
  • A group of twelve seniors (ten of which are members of Radyr Youth Centre) took part in an international exchange trip to Los Angeles in the USA. Hosted by the ‘Spirit of Youth’ organisation the young people aged 15 – 18 got to participate in a variety of activities including a trip to Santa Monica Beach, Disneyland, Warner Bros Studios, USC, the IMAX theatre and a trip to Santa Monica Boys & Girls Clubs and to top it all off got to spend two days in Malibu at the Junior Blind Camp working with young adults that are blind or have impaired vision. All of the young people had a once in a lifetime experience and bonded amazingly.
  • Gwaelod Y Garth Youth Club was re-launched as a junior provision delivering the Young Achievers Award. After promoting the evening during an assembly at the local Primary School the attendance was very good with over 30 young people attending – the successful term was rounded off with a trip to Quasar in Barry Island.
